Advice for entrepreneurs

Advice for entrepreneurs

My mentor and 18-year business partner, Kyle Wilson, would often say, “Some people you have to tell to speed up and some people you have to tell to slow down!”

As an entrepreneur, I’ve noticed that most people have one default or the other, whether they’re clients I coach or team members.

Therefore, I’m saying to those who need to pick up speed, “You just need to stretch and do a little bit more. Stop procrastinating, stop trying to make it perfect, and create some additional time to get the plane off the ground”—a reference to what Brian Tracy taught Kyle at his house in 1993 while he was promoting him at his events. He urged him to fork over the cash and wait three to five years to get the aircraft airborne so he could reach 300 mph in the jet stream rather than wasting tonnes of fuel travelling 80 mph on my company’s runway.

I am learning, however, that sometimes you have to slow down enough to take care of yourself if you belong to the second group, which is more wired than I am and for whom focus and hard work are not the biggest challenges.

I’ve never experienced a shortage of motivation in my business. I’ve always had a strong work ethic. However, I believe that one of the things I’ve always found difficult is prioritising my relationships, spirituality, and physical well-being.

Kyle remembers Jim Rohn giving him a piece of advice when he had him autographing hundreds of books at his house in Texas on a Friday at 10 o’clock at night. “Kyle, you’re obviously able to get so much done,” he said. Your attention is amazing. However, you should put in more effort to build a wonderful lifestyle.”

“I’ll take care of me for you if you’ll take care of you for me,” was another pearl of wisdom that Kyle frequently imparted. That’s the reason it’s so crucial for us to grow personally! Not just for ourselves, but also for the people in our lives. We can contribute more to our relationships the better we take care of ourselves.

Although I had always made my family a priority and also have maintained and lived a great lifestyle, I still struggled primarily with my health. But this past year, I finally caught the pass. Now, my physical, mental, and spiritual health are my highest priorities. And, I also realized being more intentional in those areas is probably one of the best things I can do for my business at the end of the day. We are all the number one product that we’re offering, and how we show up impacts every important relationship in our lives.

One of the biggest temptations as an entrepreneur is to have the mindset of more is more. But in business, oftentimes more creates more stuff to take care of. Yes, more can also be a great opportunity for growth, and I’m not suggesting for you to back off. I am recommending that, as you are growing in business, keep up your personal growth levels as well. If your ability to keep up on a personal level physically, mentally, spiritually, and relationally is lacking, I think it’s okay sometimes to put the business brake on to make sure you have the foundation laid that will allow you to grow your business even deeper and better than ever before.

So as a reminder, as Kyle Wilson would advise, when you are producing wealth and opportunity for yourself and others, do not overlook taking care of the most important person in your life, YOU! Your family, loved ones, friends, team, and clients will thank you!
